James, William, Robert and David McDonald were brothers from a family of eleven children born and brought up in New Abbey, seven miles from Dumfries. All four brothers served in the forces during World War One and all four survived. Photographs and souvenirs kept by the brothers have been kindly loaned by James’ daughter Edith McDonald and great niece Elizabeth Weir.
