FIND OUT THE FUTURE OF FARMING AT THE BARONY FUN DAY

Event: Future of Farming and Forestry Fun Day!
Date: Saturday 1 November 2014; 12pm – 4pm
Location: SRUC Barony Campus, Parkgate, Dumfries and Galloway, DG1 3NE
The exciting science of modern day land use will be on display at the Future of Farming and Forestry Fun Day at SRUC Barony on Saturday 1 November. This fantastic, free event will feature games, crafts and of course, farm animals. Visitors of all ages will be able to explore some of the exciting science going on right here in Scotland.
They will be able to try their hand at chopping down giant trees with our forestry simulator, before trying out a variety of wood-based crafts from walking sticks to magic wands and Christmas tree decorations.
Our heat sensing camera – often used to help diagnose sick farm animals – will be turned on our human visitors who will be able to find out more about this amazing technology which can also be used to find people lost in the wilderness, or even dead bodies.
The day will also introduce people to modern day dairy farming, which has changed mightily over the years. As well as seeing some of our cows and their calves, visitors will witness our robotic milker at work and try their hand at milking the old fashioned way. There will also be fun games around the current genetics research into making our milk healthier.
Also on the genetics and technology side we will have demonstrations of electronic identification tags. These are put in sheep’s ears and can tell farmers all sorts of things about their animals with just the wave a wand! There will also be the chance to check out other modern farming kit which keeps farmers and scientists up-to-date and animals healthy and happy.
For all this and more, come along, have a cuppa, and learn something while having a blast!
