CASTLE DOUGLAS V DALBEATTIE HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS CRICKET DERBY

On Friday 15th May Castle Douglas High School girls cricket team made the short trip over to Dalbeattie to play in a local derby against Dalbeattie High School girls team which was formed following a taster session with the Scotland Women’s Coach, Kari Carswell, in February.
Unfortunately the weather was pretty grim so the game took place in the school sports hall with a small audience there to watch and support! The home side won the toss and decided to field first. The CD girls showed their experience and made quick progress putting the fielders under pressure and taking risks which paid off. Top run-scorers were Laura Scobie with 35 and Orla Montgomery with 21. However the Dalbeattie girls’ bowling was strong and surprised the visitors at times. CDHS scored 166-7 from the allotted 20 overs.
After a quick team talk Dalbeattie batted and kept the CD girls on their toes. However their experience over the home side showed and their attacking fielding made it difficult for many runs to be scored. Wickets fell fairly quickly. Dalbeattie scored 41 all out. Top wicket-taker was young Orla Montgomery taking 2 wickets for only one run! Catriona Clark also took two fabulous catches and along with her great leadership as captain earned her the title of CD player of the match! Philippa won Dalbeattie player of the match for her amazing performance both on the field and with the bat!
Galloway Cricket Club are grateful to Simon Mein at Dalbeattie High School for organising/hosting the game. All the girls are looking forward to taking part in a secondary school girls’ competition in Stirling in June which is being hosted by Cricket Scotland.
