This July, an inspiring young girl is taking on a challenge that would make most adults think twice. Hazel, a determined 12-year-old from Kettleholm, is preparing to cycle an incredible 160 kilometres from Dumfries to Glasgow to raise vital funds for Mossburn Community Farm.
Hazel is following in the tyre tracks of Mossburn volunteer and fundraiser Josh who recently completed the same gruelling route in just one day as part of a team which included 2022 Scottish Road Race Champion Beth Harley-Jepson. Beth says “This route was a genuine challenge both physically and mentally! I’ve done some big rides over the years but this one was up there for the sheer grit required. I’m so impressed to see Hazel taking on this challenge!” Hazel will take on the challenge with a couple of alterations and over two intense days with her dad, Tim, riding alongside her. The route is no easy ride – primarily off-road and featuring nearly 3,000 metres of climbing, it’s a true test of endurance, strength, and sheer determination.
Hazel’s motivation is heartfelt – “I have always enjoyed visiting Mossburn,” she says. “I really like riding my bike, and I wanted to do something to help. I was inspired by the ride that the adults did and thought it would be a good challenge! I like listening to all the birdsong when we are riding off-road.”
Initially setting a modest fundraising goal of £1 for every kilometre, Hazel has already smashed that target – but she’s not stopping there. With the support of the Dumfries & Galloway community, she is now hoping to raise much more. Every donation she receives will go directly to supporting Mossburn’s incredible work caring for animals and providing vital therapeutic services.
Mossburn Community Farm, located in Lockerbie, offers sanctuary to animals that have been abandoned, neglected, or can no longer be cared for by their owners. But Mossburn is more than a rescue centre – it’s also a hub of community care, offering animal-assisted therapy and learning to individuals facing mental health or behavioural challenges, anxiety, loneliness, and more. Their work transforms lives – both animal and human – every single day. They also provide volunteering and work experience opportunities for individuals of all abilities and backgrounds and welcome visitors daily.
Despite being free to visit, maintaining the charity comes at a significant cost. With monthly feed bills reaching up to £1,000 and additional expenses like veterinary care and utility costs, every penny raised through Hazel’s ride makes a real difference.
Hazel and Tim aim to complete the ride on the 11th and 12th of July, weather permitting. With the route exposed in places, they are taking precautions to ensure safety while pushing toward their goal.
