A local woman is set to climb Mount Fuji in Japan on 30 June 2025 in a remarkable fundraising challenge to support The Usual Place—a well-known community café and social enterprise based in Dumfries.
Kate is raising funds for the charity, which provides training, mentoring, and work experience for young disabled people across Dumfries & Galloway.
Writing on her JustGiving page, she explained: “I have always wanted to climb Mount Fuji and this June I am finally doing it! It has occurred to me it would be silly to not try and raise money for a good cause in the process.
The good cause in question I have chosen is The Usual Place. Based in Dumfries (Scotland), The Usual Place is a community cafe that employs and provides training for young disabled individuals in the community.
Long story short I have been blown away by how much the experience benefitted my sister and I observe every time I visit how much it means to these lovely individuals that they are truly being given a chance to feel a part of their community. Establishments like The Usual Place should be norm.”
This year, The Usual Place celebrates its 10th anniversary. For the past decade, the Dumfries café has helped young people with additional support needs gain confidence and build skills in a supportive, real-life working environment. However, the Usual Place is currently facing significant financial pressures due to rising costs and limited access to funding.
Fundraising efforts like Kate’s Mount Fuji challenge are vital to supporting the future of the charity and the young people who rely on it.
