Take action for Scotland’s Dementia Awareness Week, 4-10 June
Scotland’s Dementia Awareness Week is Monday 4 June to Sunday 10 June 2018. Alzheimer Scotland is calling on the people of Dumfries & Galloway to help make sure nobody faces dementia alone.
Dementia affects almost every family in Scotland – it’s our biggest public health issue. This year, Alzheimer Scotland wants everyone to find out more about dementia, especially the small but vital things we can all do to help people live well with the condition. With the right information, care and support – alongside better public awareness and understanding – people with dementia will be recognised and valued in our local communities.
People across Dumfries & Galloway are being invited to drop into the Dumfries Dementia Resource Centre’s Open Evening on Monday the 4th of June from 5pm to 7pm. As well as being able to explore the lovely centre, staff will be on hand to offer support and information on Alzheimer Scotland’s local dementia services.
There will also be a Pub Quiz held at the Brig Inn Pub on 35 Bridge Street in Lockerbie on Thursday the 7th of June at 7pm. Teams of 4 can enter for £10, with first prize winning £100 and a trophy, as well as prizes for bonus questions and the teams coming 2nd and 3rd. Contact Bill Sanger for more information on this event on 07492572833.
Henry Rankin, a person living with dementia and member of the Scottish Dementia Working Group, said: “Being diagnosed with dementia turned my life upside down. I wasn’t sure what would happen, or how I would cope. How would people treat me when they knew I had dementia? But with the right help, I’ve been able to plan ahead and decide what I want to do. I’m being supported to live well with dementia. I hope that this Dementia Awareness Week, more people find out about dementia, what it means to have the condition and how they could help.”
