Six S2 student girls from Kirkcudbright Academy who can’t live without their modern day essentials are putting themselves to the test for 24 hours by doing without sleep, wifi and junk food for charity.
Maya Johnston, Ellis Stables, Heather McKnight, Belle Mcconnell, Chloe Connor and Isla Ginnelly are all in the same ‘Social Studies” at school. Their class is currently doing a project on raising awareness of worldwide poverty, and all the pupils have been split into three groups, each group has to choose their own way of raising awareness.
The six teenage girls decided to support the children’s charity UNICEF, that works in 190 countries and territories to protect the rights of every child. UNICEF has spent 70 years working to improve the lives of children and their families. Defending children’s rights throughout their lives requires a global presence, aiming to produce results and understand their effects.
13 year old student Maya Johnston told DGWGO ” We thought the best way forward would be to choose a charity to fundraise for. As a group we did research into charities and all decided that UNICEF was one that was close to all our hearts.
We know unlike many children from all over the world just how privileged we are to have warm homes, food on our tables and luxuries like broadband and television, so we have therefore opted to be without our essentials.
For 24 hours we have chosen to go without sleep because many children across the world do not have a warm safe bed to go to, we decided not to eat any junk food as many of these children are starving to death and finally, as we are all addicted to constantly contacting each other with our smartphones, we are giving up our wifi for the day because we feel that our phones are an unessential luxury.”
The group are starting their task at 9.00AM on Friday, 10th February 2017 at School and will be continuing right through the night, supporting each other camping out in a garden shed.
