Council Carparks To Be Explored for Motorhome Stopover Provision across Dumfries and Galloway

Last year, supported by Partners and local communities, Dumfries and Galloway Council undertook a number of key initiatives to welcome visitors back to our region following the COVID pandemic restrictions.

With a rise in the number of motorhomes visiting or staying in Scotland there has been an increased interest in the provision of continental style ‘Aires’ which are simply safe spaces for Motorhomes to stop over for one or two nights. Aires epitomise the freedom of motorhome holidays allowing visitors to easily access beautiful countryside and local communities, with the ability to stay overnight at unique locations.

Taking on board the feedback from last year, D&G Council are keen to work closely with  communities as the region again welcomes visitors.

Derek Hextall Ward Officer – Lochar Ward said

One of the avenues being explored to accommodate the increase in Motorhome traffic is the suggestion to create designated motorhome parking bays in certain DGC owned/managed car parks across the region.   We have developed an online form to capture the opinions locally with regard to the idea of motorhomes being permitted to stay overnight in the suggested car parks.
Whilst there are no specific car parks within Ward 8 (Lochar), we are keen to promote this engagement across the whole region and your contribution and views from elsewhere will be invaluable.  In addition, there may be scope for community facilities to have parking nearby to adopt an Aire/Stop over approach to assist with income generation and we have some positive examples and support if this would be of interest.

Completed forms will help inform the strength of feeling surrounding this topic.  Should you have any queries relating to this matter please do not hesitate to contact your Ward Officer/Ward Assistant

PLEASE USE THIS LINK TO COMPLETE THE SURVEY.  This survey is only for Organisations to complete and will close on 31 MAY 2022.

Derek continued Our local Ward Assistants will be visiting each location to identify the opinions of users and the local community and so, if you would like to arrange to discuss any of the sites mentioned on the engagement form or Aires in general, please contact your local Ward Officer/Ward Assistant who will be happy to discuss in more detail.
