Creative Kids Given College Experience

Dumfries and Galloway College’s Creative Industries department has welcomed local school pupils through its doors for a day of artistic workshops.

The department laid on the series of interactive learning experiences for pupils from across Dumfries and Galloway to give them an insight into what life in the creative arts can offer them.

Pupils from North West Community Campus, Stranraer Academy, Annan Academy, Dalbeattie, Dumfries Academy, and Castle Douglas High School spent the day learning about ceramics, animation, illustration, studio photography, printmaking, and traditional darkroom techniques as part of the packed programme.

Students and tutors from the Creative Industries department were on hand to provide an introduction into art and design, graphic design, and photography – covering the three curriculum areas offered by the department.

Other students from the department and passport to FE courses acted as mentors and accompanied the young people throughout the six different workshops on offer.

Those in attendance noted the enthusiastic and positive atmosphere throughout the day.

Dumfries and Galloway College remains committed to working with its valued partners, including local schools and others, to ensure that the South of Scotland region benefits from having its skilled and outward-looking community of learners and teaching professionals in the area.

Dumfries and Galloway College Principal, Joanna Campbell, said:

“It was wonderful to welcome the pupils from some of our great local high schools to our campus and to offer them a sense of what pursuing the creative industries might involve for them.

“Our students and staff also benefited a great deal from working with these intelligent and creative young people over the course of the day of workshops.

“The schools in our area are a valuable asset to the South of Scotland and we fully intend to continue to build and maintain our relationships with each of them.”

Dalbeattie High teacher, Helen Paterson, said:

Pupils from Dalbeattie enjoyed the day and it has opened their minds to Creative Arts as a qualification.”
