A 40 year old man has died after the Ford Galaxy people carrier in which he was a rear seat passenger, crashed whilst travelling south on the M74 near to Beattock, around 1705 hours on Friday 18 November 2016.
The car struck the central rope barrier before coming to rest on the central reservation. As a result of the impact, the deceased was thrown from the vehicle onto the road where he was struck by a northbound silver Mercedes.
The 40 year old driver of the car and his other three male passengers aged, 23, 34 and 63 years, were all taken by ambulance to Wishaw General Hospital, Wishaw, suffering from minor injuries. All have since been released from hospital.
The 26 year old driver of the Mercedes car was not injured.
The road was re-opened around 0205 hours this morning Saturday 19 November 2016.
A number of people stopped to assist those involved in the crash, however, police are still appealing to anyone who was in the area and who witnessed the crash to contact them at the Roads Policing Unit, Motherwell Police Office via 101.
