British Telecom (BT) is carrying out nationwide consultation in relation to its phone boxes.
Our region has 112 BT boxes situated throughout it. This is your chance to have your say on the importance of your local phone box in your community. Whether you live anywhere from Langholm to Whithorn, the chances are you’ll encounter a phone box on your drive to work or walk to the shop.
Consultation closes on Friday 18 November, and Councillor Tom McAughtrie, who chairs the Council’s Communities Committee commented;
“This is the last full week of consultation. This week is National Resilience week, and is a key time to highlight the importance of some of the more isolated phone boxes in our vast and diverse region. The phone box may provide the only means of communication in an emergency, as some of our villages suffer from exceptionally poor mobile phone signal. I would encourage everyone to visit our website (at www.dumgal.gov.uk/planning) and have their say on this consultation, wherever you live, work and visit in Dumfries and Galloway.”
After the consultation closes on 18 November, our Council will work with local communities across the region to build cases for keeping some of the phone boxes that serve our region, should they be earmarked for removal by BT.
