Local MSPs Become ‘Dementia Friends’

Local MSPs Joan McAlpine and Emma harper have become ‘dementia friends’ after training from retired nurse Gladys Haining.

Gladys is a part time worker for Dumfries and Galloway Dementia Friendly Community Project. She delivers training aimed at making work places ‘Dementia Friendly.”

Commenting, Joan said:

“Gladys was great – she encouraged us to challenge negative stereotypes about living with dementia, as well as discussing how people can live well with dementia.

“Practically she was able to tell us what steps we and our staff can take to make spaces, and in particular our office, more dementia friendly.”

Emma said:

“I was grateful to Gladys for coming to our local office to deliver this training.

“As we go about our busy day to day lives, it’s important to be aware that those suffering from dementia require our time and patience.

“This is of course, especially relevant to those of us working to help and support members of the public – a proportion of whom will be dementia sufferers.”
