Richard Arkless Visits Jo Cox Memorial

Richard laid flowers at the memorial on behalf of the people of Dumfries and Galloway.

The photo accompany Richard’s statement on Jo’s death which is as follows:

“I never had the pleasure of speaking to or working with Jo Cox but we both became MPs at the same time so I knew who she was and I remember attending some induction events with her last year.

“Jo’s death is a tragedy and an affront to democracy. By all accounts she was an inspirational and passionate women who worked tirelessly to help people both at home and abroad. My thoughts have been with her husband and two young children and their terrible loss since Jo’s death on Thursday.

“I firmly believe that you cannot be an effective MP without being fully available to the people that you represent and Jo’s death will not affect the open way that I interact with my constituents.

“I am aware that when you become a public figure you expose yourself to new risks and new dangers and I will not allow recent events to change the way I personally work. In fact I am more determined to be even more available for you. If you want to speak to me or meet me – all you need to do is call my office (01387) 265 698 and they will make it happen, that will always be the case no matter what one deranged idiot does.

“My staff, who do the most incredible job, did not sign up for these risks – so I will be reviewing security for them so they feel safe at work – which everybody deserves to feel.

“It is fitting for all MPs to return to Parliament on Monday to reflect on Jo’s life – but I would also like to see MPs unite in holding simultaneous constituency meetings or surgeries in Jo’s memory. This would send out a very clear message about our democracy – MPs are public servants and must be available – we are here to help all of the people in our constituency regardless of our different views and beliefs.

“My door will remain forever open to constituents and I hope that people will continue to get in touch with me if there is anything I can do to help them.”
