SQUIRREL POX ON THE RISE AGAIN ALONG THE SOLWAY COAST

A spokesperson from Saving Scotland’s Red Squirrels stated on Facebook today thatMany people have been asking for an update on the Solway coast squirrelpox outbreak. After a brief lull in the reporting of sick red squirrels we have sadly seen a resurgence over the past few days in the Sandyhills and Dalbeattie areas.”

The Continued “We are now dealing with red-to-red squirrel transmission of the disease, and the best way to reduce the risk of transmission is to stop feeding them completely.

Our staff and volunteers are still working incredibly hard to locate sick reds and remove any grey squirrels from the area. Squirrelpox outbreaks are relatively common across the south of Scotland and can sometimes take months to burn out. With careful and persistent management, the local red squirrel population can make a full recovery.”
