As Storm Eleanor battered her way across Dumfries and Galloway last night and in the small hours of this morning a major incident was declared by Police Scotland, (Wednesday 3 January) at 12.30am in response to the number of calls from the public.
Resilience partners from Police Scotland, Dumfries and Galloway Council and Fire and Rescue Service have been working during the early hours of the morning to provide a response to calls for assistance.
Strong winds brought down a number of trees across the region resulting in a number of roads being closed due to public safety. We had gusts of up to 72mph recorded within the region overnight. Whilst roads crews have been out and attending to a number of the calls from Police Scotland and have managed to clear obstructions so that some of the roads can be re-opened, some larger trees can only be dealt with safely during daylight and as a result, these roads will remain closed.
Whilst there will be isolated incidences of power outages across the region, we have had no indication of widespread issues from Scottish Power.
With regards to flooding, there have been no reported, significant incidents. However, there is a flood warning from SEPA still in place with further coastal flooding expected at lunchtime today (Wednesday). Information relating to this has been published on the Council’s social media channels and emails have been sent to all resilience community contacts across the region.
The major incident was stood down at 4.40am.
The weather will continue to be monitored during the day and further action will be taken where required.
