Stranraer Conservation Area Regeneration Scheme Launched

Dumfries and Galloway Council are this week launching grants to help restore and protect Stranraer’s historic buildings, and applications are now invited.
The Conservation Area Regeneration Scheme (CARS) is part of a national programme to conserve Scotland’s traditional buildings and support the regeneration of town centres. The scheme is enabled by funding from Dumfries and Galloway Council and Historic Environment Scotland.
Commercial premises are the primary focus of the programme and eligible works include conservation of traditional roofs, stonework, render, gutters and downpipes, chimneys, windows and doors. The grant rate is 60% on projects up to £20,000 in value.
Assessment of applications will be based on criteria including:
• The potential to bring empty or under-used historic buildings back into use
• The protection and restoration of historic features
• The reinstatement of lost architectural details including traditional windows
• The potential impact on historic streetscapes
Work must be carried out with respect for the character and structure of the building. Repairs must use appropriate techniques and high quality materials, normally the same materials as used in the original construction.
Archie Dryburgh, Chair of our Council’s Economy, Environment and Infrastructure Committee said: “The CARS scheme is a great opportunity for people in Stranraer to improve their properties. The grants available are intended to protect traditional features so that the quality of Stranraer’s historic buildings is preserved for the future. The CARS project is an important part of the wider regeneration strategy for Stranraer and we urge owners of buildings in the town centre to get in touch to find out more about the funding available.”
Full details of the conditions of grant can be explained by the CARS Project Officer. For further information and advice please contact Pam Taylor: 030 3333 3000 ext 61482, [email protected]
