The Stove Heats Up For Big Burns Supper!

This year, The Stove Network, 100 High Street Dumfries, will run a town centre hub for this year’s Big Burns Supper Festival. The Stove will host a variety of events over the 10 days as well as being the base for the inaugural D-Lux Festival of Light.

On Tuesday 24th January, Blueprint100 celebrates the lives of artists lost in the last year with their event, ‘Dead Set’. Taking place at The Stove, in association with D-Lux Festival of Light, the evening will feature performances from local musicians as well as a discussion from Dr Sandy Whitelaw from the world leading ‘End of Life Studies’ department of Glasgow University based in Dumfries. Giant skeleton puppets of cultural icons lost last year, which featured in the Big Burns Supper Carnival, will add a uniquely Stove atmosphere to proceedings.

On Wednesday 25th January, The Stove hosts ‘Being Made in Dumfries’; an opportunity to see the next crop of local creativity before anyone else as local playwrights, writers, musicians and artists present their ‘work-in-progress’ to an audience for the first time. The event begins at 7pm and is free and open to all. If you’d like to take part please contact [email protected] or come along and see if you can spot a rough diamond.

The following evening, on Thursday 26th January Holywood actor and D+G resident Gary Lewis will host a special screening of the blackest of Glaswegian comedies. Orphans stars Lewis and was directed by Peter Mullen. The screening will be followed by a Q&A with Gary Lewis. The Stove Café will be open and serving hot food and drinks, with the film beginning at 7pm. Tickets are available for £4 from The Stove Café, or can be purchased on the night. BYOB.

The Stove’s monthly open mic night has a special edition on Friday 27th January, with ‘Brave New Words for the Bard’ and is open to writers, performers and musicians with words spoken or sung. Anyone with an original poem, song, story or performance they wish to showcase is encouraged to come along on Friday to present their work in front of a live audience. Entry is free, and open to all members of the public. The Stove Café will also be serving food and hot drinks all night. BYOB.
