Dr Liz Holt: Laughter and Humour Why do we laugh? | Talk
Sat 17 August, 5pm
Free | Booking advised
Dr Liz Holt will give a talk on humour and laughter in the context of our summer exhibitions. She will ask whether laughter and humour are as closely connected as we all tend to think, or to what extent they do different things: ‘Incongruity is central to humour, and humorous things do make us laugh. But laughter also does things in its own right, as a vital part of our interactions with one another.’ Dr Holt will draw on writings about both humour and laughter as well as her own research into laughter in conversation. We are delighted to welcome her to speak on this subject 155 years on from Rev Edwin Davis’ lecture on the Philosophy of Laughter at the Thornhill Institute in 1864. Dr Liz Holt is Head of Linguistics and Modern Languages at The University of Huddersfield. Her main area of research is in Conversation Analysis focusing on laughter as well as other aspects such as reported speech.
Located near Thornhill, CAMPLE LINE is an independent arts organisation dedicated to presenting thought-provoking international contemporary art and film for residents of the region and visitors from further afield.
