Brighouse Bay Holiday Park Celebrates Multiple Awards from David Bellamy’s Green Awards

Professor David Bellamy has named Brighouse Bay Holiday Park near Kirkcudbright as one of the UK’s greenest places to take a holiday and awarded it special accolades for protecting the natural world.

Set in 120 acres of stunning countryside, Brighouse Bay Holiday Park is the proud holder of the Gold David Bellamy Conservation Award which celebrates parks with forward-looking environmental policies. In addition, the park has also been recognised with further awards for protecting wild flowers, woodlands and hedgerows, as well as being a Bee Friendly Park. This marks over twenty years, since the inception of the David Bellamy Green Awards, that Brighouse have received recognition for the parks green credentials.

The family-run business provides a range of holiday homes to hire and to buy, as well as glamping pods and fully serviced pitch facilities for touring caravans, motorhomes and tents.

Over the parks almost 50 years, owner Douglas Gillespie and his parents before him, have planted hundreds of indigenous trees and hedges on the park, creating a natural haven for deer, red squirrels, badgers and other wildlife. A recent survey also found over 90 species of birds on and around the park.

The park has a number of ponds which are also a focus for many different resident and visiting bird species, as well as dragonflies, newts and other aquatic life. In addition, the family have created a number of wild flower areas throughout the park with high nectar-bearing blooms which provide valuable foraging resources for honey bees and other pollinators.

Brighouse Bay Holiday Park has also laid out woodland walks and trails throughout the park, along the scenic coastline and over adjacent farmland, with boards providing information on the animal and bird species it’s thousands of UK and overseas visitors each year can discover.

Douglas Gillespie said that everyone at the park was delighted at the news of David Bellamy’s top award: “We have always tried to manage Brighouse Bay Holiday Park along sustainable lines. We put in our own sewage works in the late 70’s, then installed an environmentally friendly reed bed purification system in the 80’s. We recycle water where we can, solar panels heat our swimming pool and provide hot water for the shower, toilet and laundry blocks.”

He added “We’re delighted to have held this prestigious award since it’s inception in 1997.”

“Brighouse Bay has become renowned for being a natural park with special appeal to guests looking for a perfect escape in a tranquil setting. We feel incredibly privileged to live and work in such a beautiful part of Scotland and strive to ensure that the park is in keeping with these incredible surroundings” he added.
