A SERVICE celebrating one of Dumfries’ best-known traditions will take place at the Burgh Kirk this coming Sunday.
The annual Kirkin’ of the Cornet service which is part of the Guid Nychburris celebrations will begin at 11.15am on Sunday June 14 at St Michael’s and South Parish Church.
The service will feature readings by this year’s Cornet and Cornet’s Lass, Euan Douglas and Abigail (Abi) Thomson, and will also include the traditional performance of the song Queen of the South.
St Michael’s and South Session Clerk Audrey Brown said the church was looking forward to welcoming people from across the community.
Mrs Brown said: “The Kirkin’ of the Cornet is always a very special occasion for St Michael’s and for Dumfries as a whole.
“It is one of the highlights of the church year and an opportunity to celebrate a tradition which has been part of the town’s life for several generations.
“St Michael’s is the Burgh Kirk, and we are proud to continue playing our part in an event which means so much to so many people.”
The service will bring together those involved in the Guid Nychburris celebrations, including this year’s Queen of the South Elect Megan Murray, members of the congregation and others from across the community.
Mrs Brown added: “While the service reflects traditions which are cherished by many people in Dumfries, it’s an opportunity to invite people across the community to join us in fellowship.
“We would be delighted to see familiar faces, as well as people who may never have visited St Michael’s before.
“Whether you have been involved in Guid Nychburris for many years or are simply interested in learning more about one of Dumfries’ best-loved events, you will be made very welcome.
“We hope people will stay afterwards for refreshments and the chance to catch up with friends old and new.”
Visitors attending the service will also be able to view the striking sculpture of St Michael battling the dragon which is currently on display below the pulpit.
Created by Dumfries-based Hungarian artist Ildiko Malovecz, the sculpture forms the centrepiece of a wider display which also includes artwork by AccessArt, a Dumfries-based project supporting people with learning disabilities and autism through creative activities.
Anyone wishing to attend the service is welcome to do so.
