Keep Fit At Threave With The New Trim Trail!

In 2019, the path network from Castle Douglas out to the Threave Estate and on to Lamb Island and Bridge of Dee was improved in a partnership project between National Trust for Scotland and the Galloway Glens Scheme.

The project sought to encourage access to the site by all and the routes have proved very popular through the Covid-19 lock down, acting as a valuable opportunity for people to get out into the Galloway Landscape.

This week sees the launch of a spin off element from this work, with the introduction of a ‘Threave Trim Trail’. Ten ‘stations’ have been identified on a circular route, which can be started either from the Blackpark entrance or from the car park at Threave Gardens. These stations set out 10 points around the estate at which participants can take part in a range of self-led exercises, from push ups to bunny hops, providing a great way to keep fit.

The welcome signs – one at the path entry point at Blackpark and one by the Threave Gardens Car Park – give an overview of the trail, which varies between 3.5km and 6km in length depending on the route followed.

Upon the launch of the Trim Trail route, Sam Gallacher, National Trust for Scotland Operations Manager at Threave, said:

“Our vision for Threave Estate is that there is something for everyone to enjoy, whether that’s nature, horticulture, history – or exercise! We are always looking at new ways to improve our wide-ranging offer of experiences to our visitors and local community. This trim trail is a fantastic new addition. It’s a fun and different way to connect with nature, get healthy, and enjoy being outdoors. We have been so pleased to have worked with Cllr Drysdale and the Galloway Glens Scheme to deliver this new community asset on our estate just outside Castle Douglas”

The idea for the trim trail on the new footpath route was supported by Dumfries & Galloway Councillor, Pauline Drysdale. Pauline said:

“It was a great opportunity & pleasure to work with The National Trust for Scotland, the Galloway Glens and some of our local teenagers as I have a passion for exercise, keeping fit and the great outdoors. With Covid it has been important to get outside and health professionals are now becoming more aware as to the importance of social prescribing which makes this project a perfect fit for all ages. Our beautiful area has so much to offer so please do check out the Threave Trim Trail soon if you are able!”

McNabb Laurie, Galloway Glens Team Leader added:

“The Threave Trim Trail forms part of the path improvement works we have been implementing over the past couple of years, it is great to see the installation of the signs. Many thanks to everyone involved, and the ongoing support we receive from the National Lottery Heritage Fund.”
