LOCAL MSP AND COUNCILLOR HELP GEORGETOWN CUBS WITH LITTER PICK

Dumfriesshire MSP Elaine Murray and Nith Councillor John Martin met cub scouts from the Georgetown (10th Dumfriesshire) Scout Group on Monday evening (26 May 2014) as they took part in a litter pick in Calside Park, supported by Dumfries Civic Pride and Community Safety Officer David Russell.

The boys, aged between 8 and 10, took on the challenge in advance of Scout Community Week on 2nd to 8th June, as part of the requirement for a community activity badge. They acted in pairs with one boy responsible for picking up the litter and the other for holding the bag into which the litter was deposited.

Elaine Murray said:

“The cub scouts were very enthusiastic about taking part in the litter pick and were determined to pick up every piece of rubbish they could see. As well as providing a service to the community, they were also being made more aware about the environment and how careless acts like throwing litter can damage habitat for wildlife as well as looking unsightly.”

Councillor John Martin said:

“The cub scouts provided a valuable service to their local community by picking up litter in their local park. This type of activity encourages social responsibility and gives the boys the satisfaction of knowing they are helping their local area.”
