POLICE WARN PUBLIC TO BE MORE VIGILANT AS DARKER NIGHTS CLOSE IN

With a spate of recent Break-ins across the region,Police Scotland issue a warning to the public to take more care as the night time start to get darker for longer.

Police Scotland is investigating a break-in to a cottage in Irongray, Dumfries which happened sometime between 1830 hours and 2130 hours on Tuesday 29 September 2015. The house was broken into and a number of rooms searched. Whilst nothing appears to have been stolen in this incident, damage was caused to the property.

In a second incident, there was an attempt to break-into a house in the Dalton area of Lockerbie sometime overnight Monday 28/Tuesday 29 September 2015. It appears that someone has attempted to break into the house whilst the occupants were asleep, however no entry was gained.

Detective Inspector Dean Little of Police Scotland in Dumfries said “it appears that we are experiencing a number of varying types of housebreaking’s across the area just now. Some where the occupants have been on holiday or just away from the property and in others clear attempts to break into the property when occupants are in. We urge the public to take a few minutes to review the security of their homes, and in particular when they are leaving for any length of time. Make sure all windows and doors and closed and locked. If out at night then consider leaving a light on to give the impression that the house is occupied. If going away for any length of time then why not let you neighbours know and ask them to keep an eye on the house for you. Police Scotland offers a free home security survey for householders which can give practical and low cost advice on how to improve the security of your home. It only takes a quick call to your local crime reduction officer on 101 to make an appointment.

The public are also reminded as the dark nights approach to be be that bit more vigilant to suspicious acts or behavior in the community. If you see or hear anything which ‘just isn’t right’, then we ask that they call us at the time on 101, to give us a fighting chance to respond and check it out. We are more than happy to attend to any call which helps keep people and their property safe.”
