Back To School Help Via One Stop Shop

Dumfries and Galloway Council’s Youth Work Team is hosting their first One Stop Shop to help families in Dumfries get ready for back to school. Come along on Sunday 18 August to find out more.

Donations have been flooding in from families across the region and the One Stop Shop will have everything a young person needs for school, from uniform, shoes and trainers to school bags and stationery items – all for free.

Each year families throw away around 70 kilograms of clothing, but by donating these clothes to the One Stop Shop it is prolonging the life of the garments and reducing the impact on the environment which has been a priority for the young people at Oasis Youth Centre.

It doesn’t stop there. The Youth Work Team have also joined forces with hairdresser Karen Bell at Jigsaw Hair and barber Jefferson at Jefferson Barber Shop in Dumfries to offer free haircuts to young people on the day.

The One Stop Shop will be based in Oasis Youth Centre, Newall Terrace, Dumfries and will run from 10am to 5pm on Sunday 18 August, with refreshments being served and activities for the young people to take part in whilst their families pick out free preloved clothing.

Councillor Andy Ferguson, Chairman of the Communities Committee said;

“I am delighted to see local young people wanting to make a difference in their community and also with the environment.”

Councillor John Martin, Vice Chair of the Communities Committee commented, saying;

A one stop shop is a brilliant idea. It is fantastic to see the community come together and support such an event.”
Jefferson said;
“It’s nice that we are supporting each other especially to those who need it more. In this world all we can do is to give back to the community especially for the younger generation. I’m proud to be part of this organisation. One haircut at a time and we’ll get there.”
Karen said;
“I am thrilled to be part of the one stop shop. I believe that every child should be able to go to school looking and feeling good about themselves. Unfortunately, not everyone can afford new uniform and a haircut so I’m happy to give my time and help in this amazing day to get all kids to school full of self-confidence and feeling a million dollars with everything they need to succeed.”
