Castle Douglas Farmer To Undertake 24 Hour Ploughathon for Charity

A farmer from Castle Douglas is planning to take on a 24-hour ploughathon in order to raise money for Scotland’s rural charity RSABI.

Collin Dodds and his friend, William Anderson, plan to plough at Chapelton Farm, Castle Douglas, for 24 hours non-stop. Starting at 5pm on Thursday 1st September the two tractor men will continue ploughing until 5pm on Friday 2nd September.

Collin will be using a Claas tractor and a Knervland plough for his challenge, and between them they aim to plough between 130-150 acres in the 24-hour period.

Mr. Dodds has worked for the Biggar family at Chapelton Farm for over 18 years, and will be raising money for Scotland’s rural charity RSABI, whilst Mr. Anderson is raising money for Marie Curie.

Money raised by Collin will go towards RSABI’s current campaign, Help us help them, that aims to raise £150,000 to help put a stop to rural poverty. RSABI supports people who have worked in agriculture, crofting and other land-based industries who are now experiencing hardship.

Donald and Emma Biggar from Chapelton Farm are great supporters of RSABI, and have been for many years. Mr and Mrs Biggar will provide drinks and snacks for all those wishing to see Collin and William finish their 24-hour ploughathon at 5pm on Friday 2nd September.

The Biggars have also kicked off the sponsorship by donating £250 to each of the chosen charities.

Collin Dodds said, “I chose to support the RSABI to try and help raise awareness of the charity. I know it does a lot of good work in Dumfries and Galloway, and as I am fit and healthy, I wanted to do something now to help others, as you never know what is round the corner”.

Donald Biggar added, “We are delighted Collin is doing this for RSABI, and are keen to support him”.

Jill Sloan, RSABI’s South West development officer, had the following to say about the fundraising event:

“It’s great to see people in Dumfries and Galloway supporting and raising funds for RSABI. We do a lot of work here in the region, and the funds raised by Collin will be gratefully received by us and the beneficiaries they go to help.”
