The Swallow Theatre near Whithorn is holding a weekend of events on 20-21 June to celebrate 30 years since the first public performance at the venue.
The events are open to all, and everyone is welcome along to find out what happens at Scotland’s smallest theatre.
On Saturday 20 June at 2.30pm and again at 6.30pm there will be a show celebrating the theatre’s history. Co-founder David Sumner, who, with his late wife Jill, created the theatre building from a derelict byre in his garden, will be in conversation with actor and director Dominic Goodwin. They will discuss the inspiration behind the endeavour, what the organisation got up to in the early years, and handing the theatre on to the current owners ten years ago. After an interval there will be short extracts from shows over the years which will provide an excellent taster for new visitors, as well as a nostalgic look back for longstanding customers.
On the afternoon of Sunday 21 June there will be a gathering in the theatre garden to which everyone is warmly invited. David Sumner, Dominic Goodwin and theatre regulars will read poems and sketches written over the years specifically about this much-loved venue, and local choir Lowland Lassies will provide music. Teas and ice creams will be available, and there will be an exhibition of programmes, posters and video clips in the theatre auditorium.
“We feel incredibly lucky to have been entrusted with The Swallow Theatre by the inspirational co-founder after he ran it for the first twenty years, and we’ve enjoyed every minute of our first ten years here” said the current owners of the venue. “We look forward to continuing to bring high-quality professional touring theatre and music to this corner of Scotland for many more years to come.”
