Dumfries M&S Now Offers Checkout – Free Shopping – Through The M&S App

  • Mobile Pay Go technology now available at 310 Foodhalls
  • M&S is today sharing a helpful three step tutorial video for customers on M&S.com
  • Expansion follows the recent relaunch of M&S’s digital first loyalty scheme, Sparks

Today M&S has tripled its Mobile Pay Go network from 100 to 310 stores including there Dumfries Store in South west Scotland– meaning more customers across the UK can quickly buy their groceries without visiting a till, using the M&S app on their smartphone.

A digital, contact-free shopping experience

The expansion is the latest step in an accelerated rollout of the tech as M&S progresses with its transformation plans to create digitally connected stores fit for the new world under its Never the Same Again programme. This includes offering a great digital shopping experience in store – from good customer Wi-Fi, to a well-positioned Click & Collect desk, to helpful services such as Mobile Pay Go – which offers customers a checkout-free shopping experience up to the value of £30. M&S has seen a significant move towards contact-free shopping during the Covid-19 pandemic with Mobile Pay Go just one facet of this – with over 10,000 new regular users of Mobile Pay Go coming on board since March.

The latest roll-out move marks a shift from a network of predominantly London-based stores to a UK-wide offering of Mobile Pay Go technology – from Dover to Falkirk, Belfast to Aberystwyth, and Canterbury to Carlisle. M&S is supporting the extension of the service with extensive décor and point of sale at all 310 stores, inviting customers to download the app and give Mobile Pay Go a try. Customers are also invited to refer a friend to the technology; both they and their friend will be rewarded with £1 off their next Mobile Pay Go shop.

To help customers that might be new to the technology, M&S is sharing a simple three step instructional video on M&S.com and its social channels (accessible by clicking the image below), outlining how easy it is to complete a transaction using Mobile Pay Go.

Mobile Pay Go is housed within the M&S app, right alongside Sparks – M&S’s newly-relaunched digital first loyalty programme. The two are linked within the app, meaning M&S Sparks members can easily claim their rewards and offers without visiting a till. With Sparks, good things happen every time you shop.

Helen Milford, Director of Stores at M&S said: “As part of our Never the Same Again programme, we’re accelerating the pace of our transformation – and that includes creating digitally connected stores that are fit for the future. This rollout takes our increasingly popular Mobile Pay Go technology nationwide for the first time, allowing more customers to enjoy a seamless checkout-free experience through the M&S app. With more customers starting to return to the workplace, this provides a quick and convenient lunchtime solution – making it easy to pop in, grab your items and be on your way.”

MPG: as easy as 1, 2, 3

As our tutorial video highlights – to use the service customers simply open up Mobile Pay Go from within the updated M&S app, then it’s as easy as 1, 2, 3.

How to use Mobile Pay Go:

  • Customers open their M&S app on iPhone or Android (customers must be signed up to Sparks). The app will recognise their location and invite them to start scanning items.
  • Customers can then scan products as they shop or once they’ve shopped (up to the value of £30)
  • Customers click checkout to pay using their card that’s saved in the app
  • Customers can then leave the store without visiting a till
  • Customers’ Sparks rewards (such as free tote bags & Percy Pigs) can also be claimed through the app
  • Customers can refer a friend to Mobile Pay Go and both will receive £1 off their next transaction

About Sparks

  • On Thursday 9th July M&S relaunched Sparks to its 7 million customers under a new programme promise “Good things happen every time you shop”
  • The new sparks scheme offers a more personalised experience with instant rewards, a wider selection of charities to support and more tailored personal offers, so customers can be confident that good things happen for them and the causes they care about every time they shop M&S
  • Direct feedback from over 250,000 members shaped the redesigned scheme and it was road tested and refined by over 40,000 M&S colleagues across the UK
  • Through the relaunched Sparks scheme – M&S will know its customers better than ever and will be offering greater personalisation and offers on customers’ M&S favourites – so the more you shop the better the offers become
  • Not only will Sparks’ digital first focus ensure M&S is supporting how more customers want to shop and engage with retailers, but the Sparks scheme is a critical enabler to fast forwarding M&S’ growth as digitally and data enabled business
