Idiom Launch Plans for the Future

Idiom, Dumfries High School’s Young Enterprise Company, made up of fifth and sixth year pupils, launched the Idiom Initiative at the Usual Place on Monday.

The initiative is the legacy of Idiom as a Young Enterprise Company – promoting the learning and teaching of Enterprise and Creative thinking to children in Primary School and Nursery.  The Programme has already been successfully piloted in St Andrews Nursery, Heathhall Primary and Laurieknowe Primary.

On the evening Managing Director Lyle Hamilton said “Going forward – we are aiming for a full region-wide roll out later this year, with the view of working with as many young people as we physically can, to inspire enterprise and creative thinking in the youngest among us. The team are excited to share their journey with the next generation of young entrepreneurs.”

The Idiom Initiative is backed by Dumfries and Galloway Council, who are supportive of all its aims and outcomes. In addition to this the programme has been identified by Scotland’s Enterprising Schools – a national body – as an example of ‘Interesting Practice’; sitting on par with some of the most outstanding learning and teaching initiatives from across Scotland.

The workshops will be delivered by the Idiom board, as well as a core of S5 students who intend to work with children when they leave school – Lyle Hamilton also commented that this will allow the business to “cover more schools, work with more pupils, encourage more learning: all while giving the opportunity of work experience to those who will benefit from it most.”

The young entrepreneurs behind Idiom have worked extremely hard to build up the Idiom Brand, and also announced during the evening that when the Young Enterprise Company Programme finishes the company will not cease trading, and intend to start trading as a Limited Company in July this year.

Jenna Reid, Company Accountant commented that “the Young Enterprise Company Programme has provided a massive learning experience for us all, and it’s been a fantastic foundation in which to build Idiom on. I’m looking forward to taking the company forward after the programme has come to a close!”

The company will be competing against rival Young Enterprise Companies for in the Regional Final of Young Enterprise on Tuesday the 26th of March, where a winner will be chosen to represent the region at the National Young Enterprise Finals later this year.
