The Galloway Glens Scheme aims to ‘connect people to their heritage’, while giving a boost to the local economy and supporting sustainable communities. A key strand of these efforts is to support young people of working age that are seeking employment, allowing them to remain in the region.
The Galloway Glens has therefore launched a programme that supports paid internships within the Galloway Glens area. Last week saw the recruitment of the first intern with the Galloway Fisheries Trust, with Abbie Nye taking up her role improving habitats in the Black Water of Dee. The second position is now being advertised, seeking applicants for a job-share internship in Social Media and Communications with two local charities: The Better Lives Partnership and the Castle Douglas Development Forum.
The Intern will work to:
- Create or update the social media and communications strategy for both the Better Lives Partnership and the Castle Douglas Development Forum
- Create content for the organisations’ social media and digital platforms
- Increase the reach of the organisations into new audiences
- Other administrative duties as required.
The position would suit a Social media or Communications Graduate who is looking to gain experience in this ever-growing sector, ideally someone:
- With a keen interest in communication (essential)
- Has some experience of designing or creating web and social media content for an organisation or business (desirable)
- Has some experience of using Microsoft software (essential)
- Has some experience of the charitable or voluntary sector (desirable)
The position is scheduled to run for six months and is expected to start in November 2020.
For more information and full job description, please email [email protected] Application deadline is the 6th October 2020. 40 hours a week, £9 – £9.50 per hour depending on experience.
The internship will be hosted jointly by the Better Lives Partnership and Castle Douglas Development Forum.
Carolyn Kennedy, Better Lives Partnership Project Co-ordinator, said:
“All young people deserve opportunities to gain work experience in an area of their choice, to learn transferable skills and to add value to their CV which will help them to achieve employment. We are delighted to work with the Galloway Glens and the Castle Douglas Development Forum to offer this shared Internship to a young person within two progressive local Third Sector Organisations. This Internship sits well with our ethos at the Better Lives Partnership, and the successful applicant will bring skills and knowledge which will be able to raise the profile of our Organisation through social media and digital platforms.”
Sarah-Jane Allsopp, Castle Douglas Development Forum Project Officer, said:
“As a local charity we act on behalf of the community. Communication with local people is therefore absolutely vital if we are to raise awareness, learn what is needed and assess our progress, and this internship will help us to do that. The creation of this position would not have been possible in this timeframe without support from the Galloway Glens Landscape Partnership. We are also delighted to promote and further strengthen our ongoing collaboration with the Better Lives Partnership.”
Helen Keron, the Galloway Glens’ Education & Community Engagement Officer, said:
“The need for paid intern positions that deliver quality work experience for our young people has possibly never been greater. The Galloway Glens Scheme is so fortunate to be able to help the next generation into the workplace, and for that workplace to be here in Galloway. Anyone interested in more details or in applying for the position should contact [email protected]. Our thanks, as always, go to the Galloway Glens Scheme funders, particularly the National Lottery Heritage Fund.”
The Galloway Glens Landscape Partnership Scheme is a suite of projects happening across the catchments of the rivers Ken and Dee from 2018 to 2023. £2.7million of core funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund will be matched by a variety of partners to bring over £5million of investment into the area over the 5 years.
