Dumfries Rotary Raise Over £2000 For Prostate Charities

On 1st April Dumfries Devorgilla Rotary embarked on a 12 hour Cyclathon Challenge at Tesco, Cuckoo Bridge, Dumfries in aid of Prostate Buddies D&G and Prostate Scotland.

The challenge for the Ride for Prostate used a static bike within the foyer taking it in turns to cycle the distance from Dumfries to Stranraer and back. A total of 137 miles. During the 12 hour marathon the intrepid cyclists managed to smash their distance covering 267.2 miles in total. In doing so with the generous donations from shoppers an amazing £2,069.09 was raised which will go to Prostate Buddies D&G and Prostate Scotland.

Prostate Buddies D&G are a support group based in Dumfries, to help men who have recently been diagnosed with, or are concerned about prostate disease or prostate cancer. Every member of the Buddies group is qualified in a special way in that they have all had or have prostate cancer and have been through subsequent treatments. The group is also assisted by Prostate Scotland in their work, but their service to this region could not be carried out without donations received by them. The Buddies group is manned entirely by volunteers who want to help other men come to terms with their diagnosis and talk them through what happens next in terms of treatment and further support.  Prostate Buddies D&G hold open meetings on the last Wednesday of each month at the Dumfries Baptist Church Centre. All meetings are free, and attendees can visit as often as they wish. More information can be found on their website at www.prostatebuddiesdandg.org.uk

The event on the 1st of April could not have happened without the partnering organisations involved and particularly the people giving their time and effort in collecting and cycling for the event. In particularly, thanks must be provided to Tesco and specifically Anne Croucher, Rotary Club of Dumfries, Cycling Dumfries and 710 Cycling Club without whom the money could not be raised, and of course the Buddies themselves for being there on the day and handing out advice to the public on prostate disease.

Dumfries Devorgilla President Peter Atkinson said “A huge thank you, firstly to Tesco’s Dumfries for the wonderful support in allowing the event within the store & secondly to the shoppers on the day for their generous donation”.  Roland Proudlock of Prostate Buddies D&G said “Thanks to Anne Croucher, the wonderful Tesco Community Champion and Dumfries Devorgilla Rotary Club for making this one of our most memorable events. The money will go to good use for Prostate Awareness and including our sponsoring our new radio campaign.”
