South Scotland MSP, Emma Harper, has welcomed new figures that show nearly 8,000 of Scotland’s Baby Box have been delivered across Dumfries & Galloway since the scheme’s inception.
The Scottish Government introduced the Baby Box in 2017, entitling every newborn in Scotland to a box containing essential items intended to make sure that every child has the best possible start in life.
In total, 335,775 boxes have now been distributed to parents across Scotland since the start of the project, including 7,916 in Dumfries & Galloway health board area.
Commenting Emma Harper MSP said:
“It’s fantastic that nearly 8,000 Baby Boxes have been delivered to families across Dumfries & Galloway since the Scottish government introduced them in 2017.
“The baby box is crucial to tackling child poverty – the number one priority of this Scottish government – and alongside the game-changing Scottish Child payment worth £27.15 per week per child, helps to ensure that every child has the best start in life.
“The essential items in every box are especially important when household budgets continue to be squeezed
“One item that is often mentioned is the digital thermometer. Many parents are saying how they feel assured as they are able to take the temperature of their child to accurately measure whether their child has a fever and then convey this information to a healthcare professional.
“With initiatives like the Baby Box, the Scottish government will continue to drive down child poverty.”
