Exciting Scottish Baby Theatre Pioneers Bring Performance to Dumfries

Join Starcatchers & Curious Seed at the ringside of a mini arena for MamaBabaMe for an exciting new dance, theatre and live music experience made especially for infants and their grown ups.

Through playful movement, dance and sound, MamaBabaMe explores profound new relationships and how this eternal bond evolves and grows. Everyone will recognise something of their own relationships, as parent or child – this is a show for young children and anyone who’s ever been one!

The performance will be at times, tender, playful, competitive, challenging, encompassing. The audience is invited to sit within the set around a mini-arena with soft boundary edges on which to lean, relax and observe the action. Everyone will recognise something of their own relationships – as mother, father, carer or child.

This captivating new collaboration between Scotland’s National Arts and Early Years organisation Starcatchers and award-winning dance theatre company Curious Seed. MamaBabaMe, has been developed by Curious Seed’s Artistic Director Christine Devaney and a team of artists, dancers, parents and babies; exploring themes around birth, relationships, love and tenderness.

Christine Devaney explained: “The starting point for this work was observing the importance of connection between babies and the adults in their lives, and how wonderfully challenging that can be. Exploring the very early stages of these relationships: how they continually evolve and change as the baby develops and begin to discover the world away from mum and dad.”

Rhona Matheson, Chief Executive of Starcatchers said: “We are interested in pushing the boundaries of what work can be created for babies and young children and working with artists who want to make exceptional, innovative work for this audience.”

Speaking about the motivation to create MamaBabaMe Christine Devaney explained: “The starting point for this work was observing the importance of connection between babies and the adults in their lives, and how wonderfully challenging that can be. Exploring the very early stages of these relationships: how they continually evolve and change as the baby develops and begin to discover the world away from mum and dad.  I’ve always been fascinated by how we interact with each other physically and emotionally and wanted to explore the very beginnings of these relationships through this work.”

Rhona Matheson, Chief Executive of Starcatchers said: “As a producer-led organisation, Starcatchers commissions artists to develop the productions we make.  We are interested in pushing the boundaries of what work can be created for babies and young children and working with artists who want to make exceptional, innovative work for this audience. Seeing a performance of Chalk About in 2013 inspired me to approach Christine Devaney about creating a work for an Early Years audience  which has led to this exciting new co-production of MamaBabaMe.”

MamaBabaMe will feature live music composed by award-winning musician and performer Greg Sinclair, set design from visual artist Yvonne Buskie and lighting design by Simon Wilkinson.
