ICONS PROVIDE THEME FOR BRAND NEW EXHIBITION BEHIND THE YELLOW DOOR IN DUMFRIES

Launching this Friday [6 November] at the Queen Street Gallery, and running from this Saturday to November 29, this in-house exhibition will showcase the works of many of the leading Yellow Door members.

Featuring artists and craftmakers include Edith Reyntiens, an artist, teacher and established icon painter who comes from a family steeped in The history of art. Her icon paintings provided the inspiration for this exhibition.

Also featuring are Mark Toner, a cartoonist who captures his icon subjects in comic form; Hugh Bryden, who will showcase woodcut prints depicting religious icons in unusual settings; and Louise Todd, a graphic artist who uses iconic musicians as the subjects of her work.

Jenny Rose, illustrator and printmaker produces immaculate iconic images which are humorous and thought-provoking; Evelyn Gray, will exhibit images of religious icons, work she achieved while participating in a European funded arts programme in Romania. Lucianne Lucille works in sculpture, painting and ceramics. She is particularly interested in the human form and expressing, in her individual style, the iconic religious image.

Popular Carronbridge artist Victor Henderson’s works will depict icons of St Sebastian and interiors of altars; Lady Jane Parker Clark, a botanical graphic artist, will show off her fine drawing techniques; and Alison Fair Bixler, a textile artist who uses woven fabric and felted wool.

Visual and mixed media artist, Denise Zygadlo, will be exhibiting her unique fabric art and drawings; while Janina Harrower’s work will focus on collage and many different styles influenced by her travels to Greece and Spain. Her inspiration comes from her studies of the echoes of the past in the vast Byzantine churches.

Evelyn Gray said: “We chose this theme because we were inspired by Edith Reyntien’s amazing charcoal and mixed media drawings of icons.
“This is an exciting opportunity for the artists to use their creative expertise and produce work which can be images or representations of important and enduring symbols.
“We hope that, in this lead-up to the festive period, this icon exhibition will be appreciated in so many different ways.
“The Yellow Door Gallery lends itself well to our exhibition. It is an amazing space and provides a really interesting backdrop for exhibiting an entire range of artwork.
“The character of the building is reminiscent of somewhere in Paris or Venice and is so far removed from other really lovely, but conventional galleries.
“We hope that everyone will pop in to the gallery and take a look at the stunning artwork created by artists and craftmakers from the region.”
