Name Change Marks Birth of Ambitious New Arts Organisation Based In Dumfries and Galloway

Upland builds on Spring Fling open studios weekend with the promise of a year-round programme for artists and the community

The organisation behind one of Scotland’s top art events is changing its name – but the annual open studios weekend will still be called Spring Fling.
The change is an important part of its project to evolve into a new and broader visual art and craft development organisation based in Dumfries and Galloway.
Upland CIC (Community Interest Company) will support artists and makers based in, and with connections to, the region. It will deliver festivals, events, training, networking, support and opportunities as part of a year-round programme which will benefit the region, its artists, communities and economy.
The annual Spring Fling open studios weekend will be Upland’s flagship event, keeping the name and identity that have been so successfully established since it was founded in 2003.
Leah Black, Upland Director, said: “Dumfries and Galloway is an amazingly creative place and has huge potential. We have worked closely with artists, and the region’s existing peer organisations and networks, to discuss the way ahead.
“Upland is here to provide a bold and ambitious new way to support the visual art and craft sector.
“The Spring Fling open studios weekend is a key part of this. As a nationally and internationally recognised part of Scotland’s arts calendar we want to see it go from strength to strength. Upland is all about building on this success and providing inspiring opportunities and activities for artists, makers and audiences all year round.”
A series of innovative Upland projects will be unveiled over the coming months which are aimed at many different groups in the community.
In the meantime a new website has been launched at www.weareupland.com.
Upland is the result of the year-long Evolution project which worked with artists and makers to identify how best to serve their needs.
Upland CIC replaces Spring Fling CIC, which was set up in 2009, as the body which runs Spring Fling and the wider programme of activities.
The new CIC, which will keep the existing Spring Fling office at Gracefield Arts Centre in Dumfries, will work closely with other arts bodies in the region to further-strengthen the sector.
