The Scottish Chamber Orchestra (SCO) begins its busy summer schedule of national and international touring with two concerts in Stranraer (Ryan Centre, 5 June) and Annan (Annan Academy, 6 June). Together with German violinist and director Florian Donderer, the Orchestra presents a programme of popular classics from Mendelssohn, Mozart, and Haydn.
The concert opens with the beautiful Mendelssohn Hebrides Overture, inspired by the composer’s visit to Fingal’s Cave on the island of Staffa, located in the Hebrides archipelago off the west coast of Scotland. The programme also features Mozart’s rhythmic Violin Concerto No 5 ‘Turkish’, which the Orchestra most recently performed with Scottish superstar violinist Nicola Benedetti in April 2014. Haydn’s well-loved Symphony No 101 ‘The Clock’ – known for the popular ticking rhythm throughout the second movement – completes the programme.
Florian Donderer has been concertmaster of the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen since 1999, where he has made a name for himself for directing the orchestra from the concertmaster’s desk. In this position he is frequently asked to play with internationally-acclaimed orchestras such as the SCO, Festival Strings Lucerne, Kammerorchester Basel, Camerata Bern, and Filharmoonia Tallin.
These concerts in Stranraer and Annan form part of the Orchestra’s annual tour to the South of Scotland, which also encompasses Duns on 7 June. This is the twelfth consecutive year that the SCO has toured to the South of Scotland as part of its summer season, continuing its commitment to serve the whole of the nation in addition to its main performance season in Scotland’s principal cities.
