3D Printing Coming To A Library Near You

Dumfries and Galloway Council’s Library Service is delighted to announce that they will soon be playing host to a new 3D printer.

As part of a national programme through the Scottish Library and Information Council (SLIC), over £76,000 has been invested in libraries 3D printing projects.

Dumfries and Galloway Libraries Learning Support Officers are being trained by SLIC as 3D printing champions. Our Council aims to provide the best start for all our children as well as being an inclusive Council. The region-wide activity programme will deliver projects to inspire creativity, increasing opportunities and will improve the level of skills within our communities, schools and workforce.

The plan is to tour the printer around several libraries in the region before creating and developing possible learning programmes, as well as considering how the printer could be used to engage with local businesses and in doing so linking into another Council priority – to build the local economy.

Free workshops will be offered around the region to attract a wide range audience from school children to senior Citizens.

These multi activity workshops will demonstrate the printer in action and show finished printed models, produced either by scanning an object linked to classes work within the Curriculum for Excellence, or by downloading ready-made digital designs from free online 3D resources. There may also be the opportunity to explore Computer Aided Design (CAD), to exercise creative talents.

Chairman of the Council’s Communities Committee, Councillor Tom McAughtrie, said;

“I believe 3D printing has huge potential for our local communities to learn and create and we are delighted we now have access to this leading technology here in Dumfries and Galloway. I look forward to hearing about the developments over the next few months. The use of this ground breaking technology will allow our Council to continue to meet our commitments and deliver on our priorities.”
