Big Fit Walk Calls on Dumfries & Galloway to Join Biggest Short Walk of the Year

The people of Dumfries & Galloway are being encouraged to get outside and get walking this June after Scotland’s walking charity launched the 15th annual Big Fit Walk.

Organised by Paths for All, the campaign will see Dumfries & Galloway become more active over the next four weeks as the charity encourages people of all ages and abilities to organise a 30-minute walk, or join one being held in their local area.

The campaign, which was launched last week at Aberdeen Youth Games by Minister for Mental Health Maureen Watt, aims to inspire communities across Scotland to come together for a walk to celebrate the benefits of being active.

With many keen to get involved, walks in Dumfries & Galloway are already being planned.

Last year, walks were held from the Western Isles to the Scottish Borders, involving thousands of people walking with their friends, schools, clubs, groups and workplaces.

Ian Findlay, Chief Officer at Paths for All said: “Launching the Big Fit Walk is one of the highlights of our year because it sees communities, groups and individuals come together to enjoy the many benefits of simply going for a 30-minute walk.
“Last year, over 200 walks took place across the country involving people of all ages and abilities.
“Paths for All are committed to promoting everyday walking as one of the easiest ways to improve your overall health and wellbeing through physical activity.
“The Big Fit Walk is a great way for us to spread this message, bring people together and nourish a sense of community.
“We’re so pleased to have kick started this year’s campaign with all the young people involved in the Aberdeen Youth Games, and we hope this year will be bigger and better than ever before.”

Anyone can organise a Big Fit Walk this June, and Paths for All has everything you need to get started. A specially-dedicated website – www.bigfitwalk.scot – has guidance, invites, posters and images all available to order or download.

And, organisers who register their walk on the site’s online map will be entered into a prize draw to win an iPad mini.
