Canonbie Primary School Help Clean Up Their Surrounding Area

PUPILS at Canonbie Primary School have been actively supporting the Great British Spring Clean and Keep Scotland Beautiful’s Summer Clean efforts.

The environment protecting youngsters have been out and about in the surrounding area with their teachers carefully picking and bagging litter.

One group was joined by constituency MSP Oliver Mundell and his father Dumfriesshire, Clydesdale and Tweeddale MP David Mundell as they gathered discarded rubbish from the scenic banks of the River Esk.

The politicians praised the effort pointing out the eagle-eyed children were spotting even the smallest of items amongst the stones.

Oliver Mundell, who is Scottish Conservatives’ shadow Cabinet Secretary for Education, said: “The Canonbie pupils are setting an excellent example. Discarded litter is not just an eyesore, it is potentially dangerous to wildlife and pets.”

David Mundell added: “It never ceases to surprise me why anyone would throw away rubbish when they can take it home and perhaps even recycle. The sides of some of our roads are a disgrace.”

Both parliamentarians had warm words for growing community efforts across their constituencies to clean-up rubbish, pointing out the volunteers were conveying a positive image to visitors as the tourism season reopened after lengthy lockdowns.
