D&G COUNCIL TO AGREE UPDATED PRIMARY SCHOOL CAPACITIES FOR THE REGION

The Dumfries and Galloway Council’s Education Committee (10.03.2016) will be asked to agree updated capacities for all primary schools in the region.

These updated capacities are in line with updated guidance from the Scottish Government, which the Education Committee agreed to adopt (24.11.15)

Council officers reviewed floor plans for all primary schools across the region to update the functional capacity figures.

The updated capacities will support:
• Forward planning, particularly where there is high demand for places
• Placing requests and the appeals process
• Curriculum and organisation needs
• Estate effectiveness and monitoring, including collecting data
• A baseline for consulting on delivery
• Scottish Government policy expectations on capacity planning

It must be noted that the capacity figures are physical/functional, dependent on physical space, and are not the operating capacity, which depends on factors such as the number of teachers.

Councillor Jeff Leaver, chairman of the Education Committee, said, “Providing the best start in life for all our children is a priority for our Council. This work on school capacities delivers a solid foundation on which we can plan for the future, better deal with placing requests, and deliver curriculum needs. ”
