DUMFRIES AND GALLOWAY COUNCIL BRINGS GENERATIONS CLOSER TOGETHER

Dumfries and Galloway Council is bringing generations closer together through technology.
As part of the Upper Nithsdale Big Picture Project, sixteen Primary 6 pupils from Kelloholm Primary School recently interviewed members of the Nith Valley Day Centre Lunch Club, asking questions relating to photographs of the Kirkconnel and Kelloholm area from years gone by.
The interviews covered subjects like why houses had so many chimneys, what the road surfaces were like, and discussions on the gasworks and the pits. The interviews were audio-recorded and combined with digital versions of the original photographs to produce a unique audio-visual record. The resulting video, called “A Fire In Every Room”, is available to view on the Upper Nithsdale Big Picture channel on YouTube.
Councillor Tom McAughtrie, Chair of the Community and Customer Services Committee said;
“This was a fantastic project which has helped many of the younger people in our community learn a wee bit about what life was like when the pits were in operation. Also some of our older generation have had the chance to talk to young folk they might never have otherwise met. Both groups have gained a lot out of the experience.”
The project was recently nominated for a Nithsdale Community Achievement Award and the picture shows some of the participants receiving their framed nomination certificate.
