DUMFRIES AND GALLOWAY ENCOURAGED TO BE KIND THIS ‘GIVEMBER’

This weeks DGWGO Friday Focus is all about a new movement to encourage acts of kindness is to launch in Dumfries and Galloway this November. Givember, the non-profit give back movement is about giving in alternative, non-financial ways that everyone can get involved with. From the small act of opening a door, or telling someone they are appreciated, to giving back time by participating in a beach clean or knitting a blanket for the homeless.

To directly oppose the approaching commercialism of Black Friday and Christmas, The People’s Project and Team Bestel created Givember in the hopes that by looking after each other and the world around us, Dumfries and Galloway can cloud November in a sparkling ray of happiness.

Mark Jardine from The People’s Project told DGWGO Friday Focus,

“Givember is for everyone, and everyone has the opportunity to do something for the greater good. In this world it can sometimes be frustrating for people who feel they don’t have the money to make a difference.

It reminds me of the poem and carol written by Christina Rossetti; the first verse is ideal for what can often be a bleak time of year in November, while the last verse is absolutely perfect for Givember:

In the bleak midwinter, frosty wind made moan,
Earth stood hard as iron, water like a stone;
Snow had fallen, snow on snow, snow on snow,
In the bleak midwinter, long ago.

What can I give him, poor as I am?
If I were a shepherd, I would bring a lamb;
If I were a wise man, I would do my part,
Yet what can I give him; ……….. give my heart.

That for me sums up the essence of Givember, it’s not about how much money you can give or how clever you are, it’s simply about doing the simple, little things for our fellow human beings”
