DYSLEXIA SCOTLAND BRINGS ROADSHOW TO DUMFRIES AND GALLOWAY

1 a 1 a dyslexia awareness week

Difficulties with reading and writing are probably the first thing that most people associate with dyslexia, but there are other common traits such as poor short-term memory, difficulty concentrating and problems managing tasks.

Around 1 in 10 people have dyslexia – awareness is rising but there is still some misunderstanding of it and the impact it can have on peoples’ lives. If dyslexia is not properly supported it can lead to low confidence and under achievement.

The good news is that there is now lots of help and support for children and adults with dyslexia or literacy difficulties. Dyslexia Scotland is coming to Dumfries and Galloway later this month as part of a ‘mobile roadshow’ to provide information and advice to anyone who wants to find out more.
Whether you know that you have dyslexia and want to find out about the latest technologies that can help, or whether you feel you have struggled for years on your own with reading and writing difficulties, staff on the van will chat you through things that might help. There will also be lots of practical information for teachers, employers and students.
The Dyslexia Scotland van will visit Kellholm, Sanquhar, Dumfries, Lockerbie, Stranraer and Castle Douglas during the trip, in some places doing talks and showing ‘The Big Picture: Rethinking Dyslexia’ film. All the details of the trip can be found at www.dyslexiascotland.org.uk/events or by phoning 01786 446650.
Lena Gillies, National Development Officer of Dyslexia Scotland, said: ‘We are looking forward to welcoming the people of Dumfries and Galloway aboard the Dyslexia Van or to one of our talks or film screenings. We really hope to see a good turnout from people whether it is just out of curiosity or if they are looking for specific advice.’
The visit has been planned with our volunteer led branch – Dyslexia Scotland South West – which aims to work in the area to raise awareness about dyslexia.
