SUCCESSFUL EASY READ LEAFLET DEVELOPED BY DGRI TEAM

NHS Dumfries and Galloway have developed an ‘easy read’ leaflet for people attending eye test appointments at Mountainhall Treatment Centre.

Patient Services and Health Facilitators have worked together with colleagues from Ophthalmology to develop a step by step guide for people attending eye tests at Mountainhall.  The leaflet provides clear and easy to understand information about what people can expect during their appointment, from the time they arrive at the front door to when their appointment is finished.  Each step is accompanied by a photo.

Alistair McCulloch, from Castle Douglas, is keen to help promote the leaflet as he has found it to be extremely helpful.  He said the leaflet ensured he knew where to go and what to expect and that it helped him to tell his family, friends and support workers about his eye test experience.

Lesley Robinson, Health Facilitator said:

“When supporting a person with an Intellectual Disability to attend a hospital appointment I find the easy read leaflets to be of real value.  The leaflets help to prepare the person prior to the appointment and can make the appointment a more positive experience.”

Agnes Somerville, Patient Information Coordinator said:

This has been a great example of partnership working across services and shows the difference that can make to people.  The ‘easy read’ leaflet makes attending the appointment less daunting.  By showing the person what they can expect at each stage of their visit, we can help to reduce anxiety and concern.’
A suite of other Easy Read leaflets are being developed for a range of services so that people attending appointments and having treatments will understand better what will happen when they attend.

Other Easy Read leaflets currently available are

  • Pre-assessment DGRI- things that need to happen before your operation
  • Emergency Department
  • Short stay DGRI
  • The Alexandra Unit
  • Your outpatient appointment DGRI
