FERGUSSON CALLS ON COUNCIL TO PLUG KIRKCUDBRIGHT SCHOOL TRANSPORT GAP

Galloway and West Dumfries MSP Alex Fergusson has called on the Council to ensure that the 52 children from the Newton Stewart area who attend Kirkcudbright Academy continue to receive transport now that the current contractor has abruptly ceased the service.

Speaking from the Scottish Parliament, Mr Fergusson said:

“I fully accept that the Council has no legislative duty towards these 52 children, as parents have elected to send them to an out of catchment school. However, the school year is underway and it is unthinkable that even a portion of these pupils can be somehow easily accommodated in a different school in the event of another transport provider failing to be found”.

“The Council has provided transport for this week and is to be applauded for doing so. However, if it can do so for this week it can continue to do so, while charging an appropriate fare, to allow further time to identify a new operator and to prevent any disruption to the education of these 52 pupils”.
