HAVE FUN AND LEARN AT THE 2015 DUMFRIES AND GALLOWAY ENVIRONMENT FAIR

Crichton Campus will play host to hundreds of visitors as it celebrates our local wildlife and natural environment at the 2015 Dumfries and Galloway Environment Fair.

1 a 1 a enviro fairThe event, which is supported by the University of Glasgow and the University of South West Scotland, will take place on Saturday 14 March between 10am and 3.30pm in the Rutherford McCowan Building. The event has been organised by Dumfries and Galloway Council’s Countryside Rangers and students from the University of Glasgow with funding from Dumfries and Galloway Council.

The Fair is free and there is a variety of both indoor and outdoor activities You can make shelters, and charcoal with the Rangers; chat to Environmental Stewards and even test drive an Eco car. The Fair also gives you the chance to find out more about recycling, sustainable transport and volunteering as well as learn what you can do to make a difference to your local environment. You can even start helping the environment before arriving at the fair by walking, cycling or getting a bus to the Campus.

Economy, Environment and Infrastructure Committee, Councillor Colin Smyth said “The Environment Fair is a fantastic event which showcases some of the great environmental work and new ideas being carried out by the Council and other organisations. In Dumfries and Galloway the natural environment is one of our best assets and helps attract hundreds and thousands of visitors each year, growing our local economy. The Fair not only helps showcase our wildlife and landscapes but will also encourage us all to protect it for future generations”.

Volunteer organiser and Glasgow University student, Henriette Scholz said ““For visitors, having the Crichton as this year’s venue, this is the perfect occasion to have a look around the Dumfries University Campus and find out about higher education. We students will be more than happy to talk about our experience. We will also get the chance to talk to people from across the environmental sector!”

• The Fair is funded by Dumfries and Galloway Council who is the sole funder this year.
• The Fair is supported by Solway Firth Partnership, Crichton Carbon Centre, Crichton Development Company and Dumfries and Galloway Council (Countryside Services).
• Dumfries and Galloway Environment Fair is managed by Elizabeth Tindal, DGC Countryside Ranger.
• Previously held at DG One, the leisure complex in Dumfries, this is the first time the Environment Fair takes place at the Rutherford McCowan building and grounds at the Crichton.
• In 2014 the event was attended by over 50 environmental organisations and around 1800 visitors.
