Campaign for iconic Dumfries & Galloway buildings to light up in gold for September
A group of local parents and grandparents of children with cancer have joined together with other parents from around the UK to try and make a difference and change the face of childhood cancer. Without improved awareness and increased publicity, little will change in terms of early diagnosis, research, treatment or prognosis for our children.Glow Gold September is a childhood cancer awareness campaign to get iconic buildings throughout Dumfries & Galloway to illuminate in gold during the month of September.
Pat Hayes ( Main Photo), a Glenluce grandmother whose grandson ‘Thomas’ was diagnosed with cancer in 2010, says, “We need iconic buildings across Dumfries & Galloway and the rest of the UK to illuminate their external façade in gold for September from dusk until dawn. We want to improve the profile of childhood cancer to bring it in line with that of the more well known adult cancers.”
10 children are diagnosed with cancer in the UK every day. Of those a quarter won’t survive the treatment and the vast majority will be left with lifelong side effects from the treatments that have changed little in the last 30 years.
Pat told DGWGO , “Our aim is to ensure the colour gold becomes synonymous with childhood cancer, and our awareness month, September. So far we have Edinburgh Castle, St. Andrew’s Square, The Falkirk Wheel, The Kelpies Sculpture, Canterbury Cathedral, Niagara Falls and many more signed up to Glow Gold in September. But we need more iconic buildings to get involved. Please help us to get your place of work, or favourite building to light up in September for children’s cancer awareness!
With increased awareness of childhood cancer, comes greater awareness of the early signs and symptoms, earlier diagnosis, increased funding, increased research, kinder more targeted therapy and ultimately a change in the prognosis for kids diagnosed with childhood cancer.”
