Kirkbean Primary School To Close

Kirkbean Primary School Head teacher Helen Anderson announced on Facebook today that the rural primary school would be ‘Mothballed’ at the end of this school year due to the dwindling number of pupils.

The statement read “Dear friends and supporters of Kirkbean Primary School,

I write to give you an update about our partnership school. There is a very low school roll projection for 2024-25. After careful consideration, the Kirkbean Primary parents have made the decision to move their children at the end of this school session.

This means that Kirkbean Primary will be ‘mothballed’ at the end of Term 4. It makes sense with the expected upcoming low roll. I also think it also gives our school community a little more autonomy and dignity by not having the decision made for us the following year.
While we appreciate this news will be extremely disappointing, the decision to mothball our Kirkbean has not been taken lightly. Kirkbean Primary will leave a legacy of nurtured, happy children a great inspection, high attainment, a Gold Rights Respecting School Award, a great building and super community support for events and fundraising. At least we feel we can have done no more for our amazing wee school.

We will support our children by providing a fantastic transition to their next destination, while making extra special memories.

The next few months are going to be difficult but we’ll work through it together.”
