Ran by owner Ross Mawdesley, the Training For Warriors Gym in Thornhill has created a 2019 calendar featuring its members in support of the Smile of Arran Trust. Earlier this year, Ross was approached by some of his gym members with the idea of a charity calendar and he immediately got behind the idea. Photographed in the TFW Thornhill Dojo and the surrounding countryside, the calendar features everything the gym stands for; family, an active lifestyle and a healthy dose of fun.
The Smile of Arran trust was set up in memory of Arran Tosh who lost his life to a brain tumour at the age of 13. The Trust was set up to offer financial assistance to families going through similar distressing circumstances. The money raised by the Trust is also used to support music and play therapy for children who are required to spend time in a hospital as a result of their illness.
TFW Thornhill, which opened in April 2016, has worked hard to raise money for the Smile of Arran Trust since it opened two and a half years ago
Ross said:
“All proceeds raised by the calendar are going to the Smile of Arran Trust. It’s such a worthy cause and one we all hold close to our hearts at TFW Thornhill as some of our gym members are closely related to Arran. At TFW Thornhill we are Familia and it’s great to be able to support our members in this way”
When he was diagnosed, Arran’s original aim had been to raise £1000 for Cancer Research along with his friends by busking outside of the local Cancer Research shop. The Smile of Arran Trust has since raised over £200,000 to help families affected by children with cancer and the sale of this calendar by TFW Thornhill will continue to contribute to this.

“Using the calendar every day, every week, every month will be a reminder of the fragility of life but also the wealth of human kindness and compassion that exists around us, exemplified by Arran himself.
