McAlpine Welcomes Employability Minister to Dumfries

MSP Joan McAlpine joined Employability and Training Minister Jamie Hepburn on a visit to Dumfries and Galloway College this week.

The Minister was visiting the region to learn more about training provision in rural areas.

Mr Hepburn spoke with learners on the Wind Turbine Technician course, as well as meeting with the Brian Richardson, Chair of the local Chamber, which is leading on the Developing the Young Workforce’ programme.

Developing the Young Workforce is the Scottish Government’s Youth Employment Strategy – with £5.8 million committed to reducing youth unemployment in Scotland by 40 per cent by 2021.

Dumfries and Galloway Council will receive £208,080 from the Scottish Government’s fund to help young people prepare for the world of work.

Commenting Ms McAlpine said:

“It is great that the Minister got to see first-hand the great work Carol and the staff at the College do here in Dumfries and for learners across the region.

“It was also really useful for the Minister to hear about the challenges faced delivering services in such a large rural area, as well as the Chamber’s plans to address some of the issues.”
