Modern Makers On Show at KIrkcudbright Galleries

Kirkcudbright Galleries is shining the spotlight on local artists in the town with their latest Exhibition Kirkcudbright: Modern Makers.

Kirkcudbright: Modern Makers is a celebration of creative people who currently live or work in Kirkcudbright. Kirkcudbright has been synonymous with art and creativity for well over a century. The galleries are delighted to have a chance to highlight local artists and prove that these individuals work, and creativity are still at the heart of Kirkcudbright Galleries, and the town itself.

The Artists displaying in the exhibition live and work in and around the Kirkcudbright area, much like the Kirkcudbright artists of years gone by.

The exhibition aims to showcase the diversity of Kirkcudbright’s current artistic community, to celebrates these Modern Makers, the artists who are living, working and most importantly producing artwork in this area, carrying on the tradition of those artists of the past.

The exhibition contains a wide selection of artistic skill including but not limited to drawing, painting, mixed media, sculpture, printmaking, woodworking, ceramics, textiles, silversmithing and jewellery. Proudly displayed in the Mitchell Gallery, the modern makers exhibition resides under the same roof as works by E.A Hornel, Jessie M King, Charles Oppenhiemer and many other makers of the past who have been so influential in putting Kirkcudbright on the map as “The Artist Town.”

Kirkcudbright has been commonly referred to as “The Artists Town”, an artist colony, a place where creative people from all over Scotland and the UK have come to draw inspiration for many years. The town has left a long-lasting impression on the artistic landscape of the UK, and “The Artists Town” is certainly a term the local population has embraced. Kirkcudbright residents are rightfully proud of its artistic roots. This passion for art, displaying and creating can clearly be seen over a period of many years with countless exhibitions in spaces, studios and galleries around the town.

Kirkcudbright Modern makers are;

Kate Anderson, Richard Brinley, Rachael Dilley, Elizabeth Gault, Jane Gibson, Lucy Hadley, Claire Irving, Morag Macpherson, Susan Metcalfe, Hannah Morris, Heather M Nisbet, Sunny Rathore and Jay Rubinstein

Modern makers is a selling exhibition, so not only can you enjoy the art that is on display you can take it home too!

Dumfries and Galloway Council’s Chair of Communities Committee, Councillor Andy Ferguson commented;

“Kirkcudbright has always had a very strong connection with the arts. This latest exhibition just goes to show that the towns love of the art has not faded but flourished in recent years. The Galleries are now coming up to their first anniversary celebration and seems fit that one of the exhibitions on offer during this time is one of real quality from local artists.”

Vice Chair of the Communities Committee Councillor John Martin echoed these comments;

“It’s wonderful to see the galleries celebrate their local artists in this latest exhibition, the people of Kirkcudbright are proud of their artistic heritage and rightly so! As a gallery of national significance, it is just as important that we highlight local talent as well as national and international exhibitions. A fantastic exhibition for the summer months well worth a visit.”

The Exhibition runs until 18 August. Admission is Free
